Clocking in on a phone, with no app store involved
Open an address, add it to the home screen, done. No downloads, no new accounts and no compulsory GPS.
Why no app store
Asking a team of fifteen to download an app is asking fifteen times for a forgotten Google or Apple password. Ours is a web app: it sits on the home screen with your company's icon, opens full screen and updates itself. In practice nobody notices the difference, except that setting someone up takes ten seconds instead of ten minutes.
What each person can do from their phone
- Clock in, clock out, start and end a break.
- See their hours, their balance and the holiday they have left.
- Book holiday and see whether it has been approved.
- Ask for a correction when they forgot to clock, with a reason.
- See this week's shifts and, if you allow it, swap one with a colleague.
Sites, visits and work away from the office
For people who never pass the office, the phone is the only clocking there is. With the projects module they pick the job as they clock in, so the hours land in the right place without a paper timesheet on Friday. Switch on clocking places and the punch is checked against the site's location at that moment — no continuous tracking, and the person sees it on screen before they tap.
What we do not do
- No location tracking outside the moment of the punch.
- No screenshots, no keystroke counting, no activity scoring — all of which several vendors in this market sell as features.
- Nothing on a personal phone beyond the browser.
Questions we get
Does it come from Google Play or the App Store?
No. You open an address in the phone browser and add it to the home screen: from then on it behaves like any other app. No store account, no manual updates, and nothing unusual for anyone to agree to on a personal phone.
Does it need GPS?
No. Clocking from a phone works without location. If you switch on clocking places, the phone checks whether it is at the site at the moment of the punch, and the person sees that before they clock. There is never continuous tracking: it looks once, at the punch, and not again.
What about people without a work phone?
They clock in on the tablet with a PIN or a card, or on a computer. Nobody has to use their personal phone for work, and the program does not assume they will.
